BREAKING: Mexican soccer continues to dominate U.S. airwaves.
Naturally, March was no different… BUT, we had a first since we started tracking soccer’s appearances on TV: Mexican soccer swept the most-watched matches of the month and the most-featured teams category. Coincidentally enough, earlier this week Steven Goff wrote a great piece for the Washington Post about Mexico being “America’s Team” for this summer’s World Cup.
When you couple demographic shifts with the U.S. not qualifying… and sprinkle in the [comparitively] monster TV ratings Liga MX and the Mexican National Team receive stateside… it’s hard to argue with Goff.
Anyways, with a FIFA international break, CONCACAF Champions League, and a big game or two in Liga MX, March was destined to be dominated by Mexico. Both Chivas and Club America continued their runs in the Champions League but also squared off in league play… in front of almost 2.5 million U.S. eyeballs on Univision.
Of the top ten most-watched matches of the month, Mexico (Liga MX or the National Team) was involved in nine. The other: U.S. Men’s National Team vs. Paraguay.
March goes the way of Liga MX and the FMF. In the words of DJ Khaled:
