Vine and GIF creators like gfycat have completely shaken the broadcast game, allowing (in this case) soccer fans to post highlights just seconds after they happen. This type of pirated, fan-generated content is causing an increasing headache for soccer leagues worldwide with the everyday supporter now directing their own highlights show.
Enter the NBA, taking note of the trend but keeping content / engagement under a League umbrella.
Would this type of solution solve all of soccer’s issues surrounding highlights? No. Will fans appreciate a model that provides HD quality and source simplicity? I’d say so.
This will be an interesting test. I for one hope it catches on… professionalizing these platforms bring tremendous marketing opportunities (and some fun from the pub on a Saturday, too).
