Wednesday night’s ICC match between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain at ‘The Horseshoe’ set an an Ohio attendance record for a soccer match with 86,641 fans packed into Ohio State University’s iconic football stadium.
No less than two weeks ago, FC Cincinnati had broken the OH record (one they owned previously) when their exhibition match v. Crystal Palace drew over 30,000 fans at Nippert Stadium on the University of Cincinnati campus.
Not to tweak OSU fans, but tomorrow sees Real Madrid take on Chelsea in another ICC match…this time at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. Two years ago Manchester United beat Real Madrid in front of 109,318 fans at Michigan Stadium (the largest crowd to see a soccer game in the United States, breaking the mark of 101,799 set at the Rose Bowl for the 1984 Olympic final).
Even in our brand of football…I guess the rivalry between these two states, and Universities, lives on.
Regardless of which stadium hosts the largest number of fans in 2016, it’s exciting to see so many people coming out to watch these top global teams live – and in person – Stateside.
