Our friends at Major League Soccer published their top-selling player jerseys for the 2022, according to sales via the online MLS Shop. This week’s announcement presented few surprises: 5-time UEFA Champions League winner and LAFC’s summer blockbuster signing Gareth Bale topped the list; USMNTers are always popular with 5 players in the top 25; and the goalscorers are king with 20 of the top 25 coming from attacking positions on the pitch.
The interest in buying player-customized jerseys is a constant across world sport, and MLS is no different. The rankings are based on overall retail sales of adidas MLS jerseys on MLSstore.com since the beginning of 2022 season through Sept. 1. Breaking down the top league in the U.S. and Canada’s purchasing pattern for fans, MLS provided this data:
- Seven players have played in a FIFA World Cup match: Douglas Costa (Brazil), Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández (Mexico), Lorenzo Insigne (Italy), Nicolás Lodeiro (Uruguay), Raúl Ruidíaz (Peru), Xherdan Shaqiri (Switzerland), Carlos Vela (Mexico).
- Nine players were 2022 MLS All-Star Selections: Valentín Castellanos (New York City FC), Sebastián Driussi (Austin FC), Carles Gil (New England Revolution), Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández (LA Galaxy), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders FC), Hany Mukhtar (Nashville SC), Raúl Ruidíaz (Seattle Sounders FC), Carlos Vela (LAFC), Walker Zimmerman (Nashville SC).
- Six are first-year MLS Players: Gareth Bale (LAFC), Douglas Costa (LA Galaxy), Christian Fuchs (Charlotte FC), Lorenzo Insigne (Toronto FC), Xherdan Shaqiri (Chicago Fire FC), Karol Świderski (Charlotte FC).
A record-setting fifteen clubs are represented in the top 25, including Charlotte FC who had two players rank in the top 25 in the club’s debut season: Fuchs (No. 2) and Karol Świderski (No. 7).
