Champions League: Alphonso Davies’ Impact on Social Media

After a pause, a resumption, and a truncated schedule, the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League season officially came to an end last weekend. Bayern Munich, winners of the German Bundesliga for eight consecutive seasons, faced off against Paris Saint-Germain, winners of the French Ligue 1 for three years running, who made their first-ever appearance in the competition’s championship game.

Two global brands with plenty of championship and star power pedigree. By now you know the result of the game. Whether you watched on CBS Sports Network, CBS All Access, Univision, TUDN, or followed along on social media, you saw Bayern’s victory thanks to Kingsley Coman’s 59th minute goal.

Undoubtedly, the Champions League final is one of the biggest games on any soccer fans’ calendar and social media was abuzz in conversation before, during, and after the game. But here in North America there was one person in particular who featured heavily in conversation. Canadian international and Vancouver Whitecaps homegrown player, Alphonso Davies, was on the fingertips of many soccer fans.

Alphonso’s rise to fame the past few months since securing a starting place in Bayern’s lineup has been a great story to watch, especially for fans of MLS who saw his potential week in and week out. From getting an Instagram follow from fellow Canadian Drake to his girlfriend and current PSG FĂ©minine player being among the 10 most-mentioned players on Twitter, Alphonso has certainly made a name for himself… and collected some nice silverware along the way!
