Turner Acquires TV Rights for UEFA Champions League

Didn’t see that one coming. Nor did anyone else in the soccer world.

In a story that surprised everyone last week, Turner h won the U.S. English-language media rights to broadcast the UEFA Champions League starting in 2018. The deal last for three seasons is worth more than $60 million per season. Univision maintains the Spanish-language rights, with a winning bid around $35 million per season.

Turner made headlines a few years ago when they won a share of rights to broadcast NCAA’s March Madness across their TNT, TBS, and TruTV networks. They’re making headlines now as they haven’t broadcast a single minute of soccer since the 1990 World Cup.

Hiring the proper talent and developing a strong presentation will be key to any potential success. Looking forward to following this closely during the next 1.5 years ahead of their first match.
