Detroit Enters MLS Expansion Talks with New Ownership Group

Behind a pair of NBA owners, Detroit is throwing itself into the next round of MLS expansion, with the league aiming for 28 teams in its next round of expansion. A strong ownership group with significant financial backing is required for an expansion franchise these days and Detroit has that in Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores and Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert.

With soccer being the most popular youth sport in the state of Michigan and city of Detroit and the prospect of a massive sports and entertainment district downtown featuring four professional stadiums within blocks of each other, Detroit has plenty of positives to offer as an MLS market. While there are already two lower-level teams in Detroit, including Detroit City FC, the plan is for a new MLS franchise to compliment them.

Safe to say we’ll be hearing a lot more of MLS expansion talks and Detroit over the coming months and years.
